Common questions about test and tag and RCD testing

How often does equipment need to be tested and tagged in NSW?

It depends on where it's used. SafeWork NSW says plug-in equipment used in harsh conditions, like moisture, heat, dust or knocks, should be tested at least every 12 months, workshop and commercial cleaning equipment about every 6 months, and hire equipment every 3 months. We set up the cycle to suit your site so you're not chasing it.

How often should safety switches (RCDs) be tested?

Push-button tests are usually every 6 months, with a timed trip test every 1 to 2 years depending on the type of workplace (AS/NZS 3760). Records need to be kept for every test except daily push-button checks.

Who is responsible for test and tag at a workplace?

Whoever runs or controls the workplace. They need to make sure equipment and safety switches are tested regularly by a competent person, and that the records are kept.

Does brand new equipment need testing?

Not straight out of the box, unless there's a reason to think it's unsafe. It goes onto the testing cycle from there.
